The Pedal Board I Miss…

In one of my older posts, “After the Storm,” I wrote that my pedal board was stolen during Hurricane Ike. Well, in its memory, I wanted to share what made up the hunk of wood and Velcro that I cherished.

1) Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal

Pretty standard for any guitarist, this orange beauty could give me that little edge on any blues solo. I was planning on modifying it, but you know…

2) Electro-Harmonix Little Big Muff

Most use the bigger, Russian Big Muff, but I loved the versatility on this little puppy. It could go from old black guy deep to a slapped baby screech with just a twist of a knob.

3) Dunlop Cry-Baby Wah

Also pretty standard, but I used the hell out of this thing. I eventually had to wrap the bottom with duck-tape because it was falling apart.

4) DOD Vibro-Thang

Luckily I removed this pedal from the board for repair before it could get stolen. It’s a Vibrato and Phaser pedal, and had the ability to use both at the same time. It’s kind of random at times, but that makes me love it more.

5) Electro-Harmonix Nano Doctor Q

I used call it the “Doctor quack.” Any riff sounded funky-fresh when I turned this baby on.

6) Electro-Harmonix Double Muff

Why I have one when you can have two? What I loved about this pedal is that one the “single” setting, it gave juat a slight distortion that went perfect with sliding.

7) Electro-Harmonic POG

Jesus, this was the holy mother of all that was awesome. The POG (Polyphonic Octave Generator) could carbon copy the octave above and below the note you were playing. With this, I could go from a twangy mandolin sound to a deep bass.

I do really miss them, but I’m planning in the near future to replace all of them.

The “Sames” of Jessie Eisenberg In Adventureland and Zombieland

Truthfully, from the heart, I loved both of these movies. They both are very different films, but Jessie Eisenberg does seem to bring some of his character in Adventureland into the zombie realm.

1) He is the main character.

2) He is awkward.

3) He has something against his parents.

4) He is looking for love.

5) He is a virgin.

6) He makes a friend who is “weird.”

7) A hot girl who isn’t the supporting actress shows interest in him.

8) At the end, he ends up with the girl who told him at some point they didn’t want to be with him.

9) Last- but certainly not least- both movies end with “LAND”

Top 5 Books I Read as a Kid

All of us had elementary teachers shoving books down our throats, and here’s a few that I actually enjoyed.

5) Poke’mon Books (Any that I could find)

From the video games to the TV series, I loved Poke’mon. So every weekend I’d beg my parents to go to Barnes and Noble so I could get my hands on anything with that beautiful bold yellow logo stamped on it.

4) Lois Sachar’s books (Holes & Sideways Stories from Wayside School)

Jesus, these books were as weird as I was at nine. I remember curling up in a blanket with some hot cocoa and just shoving my head into these books.

3) Hank the Cowdog by John R. Erickson

I don’t know any kid who doesn’t love talking animals, and this book was full of them. I loved the audio books because the narrator would read all the animals lines in different voices.

2) Goosebumps by R.L. Stine

Any little boy I knew would go around saying these books weren’t scary at all, but I distinctly remember telling my buddy in fourth grade “I just read the new Goosebumps, and I pooped my pants!” Sometimes I’ll find one of these books on a boring afternoon and end up going to a used bookstore searching for that I haven’t read.

1) Animorphs

HOLY CRAP, these books were epic. Not only were there talking animals, but there were aliens who gave kids powers! I would go crazy for these books, and every time I had to wait for the next one I acted like I had an hormonal imbalance.

My Top 10 “Weekend” Movies

If you have some time on your hands, and you find yourself at your usual movie-rental store, here’s some flicks that you should check into. I’ve watched these movies at least a dozen times each.

10) Clerks

The beginning of a legacy. Most people have seen Clerks 2 and haven’t seen its predecessor. I’ve even met some that didn’t know there was even a first. If you don’t like movies that are centered on dialogue, DO NOT WATCH. Its full of witty banter, but the characters only actually move from one spot only a few times throughout the whole movie.

9) Gran Torino

What I love most about this movie is that every time I thought somebody popped up in scene that I didn’t like, Clint Eastwood kicked their ass. If you live in the shady part of town and you always find yourself having to deal with assholes, you’ll definitely appreciate Eastwood’s character.

8) Fight Club

If you’re a guy, and you haven’t seen this movie, drop those mittens you were knitting for your poodle and rent it now. I’m sure that after watching, you’ll start asking your buddies if they want to start an actual fight club. Then you’ll stop after the first meeting when one of your buds kicks your ass (I don’t know this from personal experience…).

7) Rocky, Any or all of them… except 5

Rocky is to tough guys as Lord of the Rings is to… well, those guys. You can’t ever go wrong with some microwave popcorn and ol’ Rock-O beatin’ the hell out of Apollo on your screen. I know every time I watch any of these movies I can’ stop saying “Ab-so-loot-ly.”

6) Requiem for a Dream

WARNING: THIS MOVIE WILL DEPRESS THE HELL OUT OF YOU.

Ask any of your friends who’ve seen it and I bet they’ll say something around the lines of: “It was depressing, but sooo good.” Watching this movie is like your girlfriend eating ice cream. She loves it then, but after eating a quart or two she is on your back asking you if she’s losing weight. Regardless, it’s heart wrenching and really makes you feel for the characters.

5) The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters

Not your average documentary, this movie centers around a recently laid off school teacher who has a lot of time on his hands and beats the “unbreakable” Donkey Kong Jr. high score. The old high score belonged to a maniac, and does everything in his power to bring the teacher down. It might sound lame, but I challenge you to watch what happens to him and not feel for him. Also, after watching you’ll be looking for high scores of your own to break.

(The website for the International Scoreboard is http://www.twingalaxies.com/)

4) Donnie Darko

We all want to contemplate the fabric of our universe at one point or another, and this movie will turn what you ever thought of time traveling upside down. If you don’t care about things of that nature, there’s a scary-ass bunny that pops up a few times and there’s a few cursing teenage boys that make fun of an overweight Asian girl.

3) The Science of Sleep

Truly a great flick that has ton of eye candy. I personally love movies that stray away from CGI and still can keep you in awe. The only problem I have with this movie is that it makes me question how people can actually dream and find that i myself can’t fall asleep for a week.

2) Stranger than Fiction

Will Ferrel and Dustin Hoffman, ‘nuff said.

1) Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind

Whenever I mention this movie in crowded room, three quarters of the people there sigh. The other quarter haven’t seen it yet. I promise you that you will fall deeply and madly in love with this movie.
